Flea treatment for dogs in Australia

    Introduction

Fleas are common in Australian dogs. They cause itch, scabs, hair loss, and sometimes infection. The fix is simple: choose a reliable product, treat on time, and clean the home. This guide was prepared by our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc. If you’d like one-to-one advice for your dog, contact us.

    Choosing a product

Chews suit active dogs and swimmers because the medicine works from the inside. If you want one chew that covers fleas and ticks with heartworm prevention and intestinal worms, Simparica Trio Chewable Tablet for Dogs is a strong all-round option. For a simple monthly flea and tick chew, NexGard Chewables for Dogs is easy to give and bath friendly when used as directed. Spot-ons can work for fussy eaters, but the coat must stay dry for the period on the label. Collars can help on the pet but do not treat the home.

    How often to dose

Most flea products are monthly. Some last longer. Follow the label and set a phone reminder. If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps. Missed a dose? Give it as soon as you remember and count the next dose from that day.

    What to expect

You may still see fleas at first as they jump on from the environment. Keep dosing on schedule and keep up the home clean-up. Skin often settles within two to three weeks. See your vet if there are sores, hot spots, or your dog seems unwell.

    Safety you should always check

    • Use dog-only products on dogs. Never use a dog product on a cat.

    • Choose the correct pack for your dog’s current weight and age.

    • Some dog spot-ons contain permethrin. Keep cats away from recently treated dogs as the label advises.

    • Do not stack flea products unless your vet tells you to.

    Home clean-up

Most of the flea problem lives off your dog. A simple routine speeds results:

    1. Vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, and the car. Empty the vacuum outside.

    2. Wash dog bedding hot and dry it well.

    3. Treat every pet in the home with a species-safe product.

    4. Keep going for at least three months to clear hidden life stages.

    FAQ

Do I need to treat in winter?
Yes. Fleas can stay active indoors and in many Australian regions year-round. Keep going all year.

Are flea shampoos enough on their own?
No. Shampoos clean the coat but do not give lasting control. Use a registered product and follow the schedule.

How soon can I bathe after a spot-on?
Follow the label wait time. Apply to clean, dry skin and let it dry fully before bathing or swimming.

Is it safe for small dogs and puppies?
Yes, when you use a product that matches species, age, and weight, and follow the label. Check the minimum age and weight on the pack.

    Can I switch products later?
Yes. Make a clean switch by starting the new product when the old one is due. This avoids double dosing and gaps.
