Flea treatment for cats in Australia

    Introduction

Fleas make cats itchy and uncomfortable. Heavy infestations can lead to scabs, hair loss, and skin infections. The good news is that modern spot-ons work well when you match the weight band and keep to the schedule. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Choosing a product

Most cats do best with a simple spot-on. If you prefer broad cover in one tube, Revolution Plus Spot-On for Cats treats fleas and ticks when used as directed. If you want longer intervals between doses, Bravecto Spot-On for Cats is long-lasting per the label. Both options can be effective; the best choice is the one you can give on time, every time.

    How often to dose

Many cat flea products are monthly. Some are long-acting. Follow the label and set a reminder. If you’re using different products for different parasites, follow the shortest re-dose interval so you don’t leave gaps. Missed a dose? Give it as soon as you remember and count the next dose from that day.

    What to expect

It’s normal to see a few fleas in the first couple of weeks as they jump on from the home environment. Keep dosing on time and keep up the house clean-up. Skin usually settles within two to three weeks. See your vet if your cat has sores, is very itchy, or seems unwell.

    Safety you should always check

    • Use cat-only products on cats. Never apply a dog product to a cat.

    • Avoid exposure to permethrin or other pyrethroid dog spot-ons. These can be dangerous to cats.

    • Choose the correct pack for your cat’s current weight and age.

    • Do not stack flea products unless your vet advises it.

    • Read labels carefully for kittens, breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats.

    Home clean-up

Most of the flea population lives off your cat. A simple routine speeds results:

    1. Vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, and car seats. Empty the vacuum outside.

    2. Wash cat bedding hot and dry it well.

    3. Treat every pet in the home with a species-safe product.

    4. Keep going for at least three months to clear hidden life stages.

    FAQ

Do indoor-only cats need flea treatment?
Yes. Fleas can hitchhike in on people or other animals. Year-round control is safer.

Can I bathe my cat after a spot-on?
Follow the label. Apply to clean, dry skin and let it dry fully before bathing.

Why is my cat still scratching after I dosed?
Fleas from the environment can jump on for a while. Keep dosing on schedule and keep up home cleaning.
