Flea dirt or regular dirt on my pet in NZ

    Introduction

Black specks on your pet or their bedding can be ordinary dust after a park trip, or a sign of fleas. Here is a simple test and a calm plan for what to do next. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    The paper towel test

Place a few specks on a damp white tissue or paper towel. Wait 30 to 60 seconds.

    • Reddish brown halo appears: likely flea dirt, which is digested blood.

    • No colour change: probably regular dirt or sand.

Where to check on your pet

Flea dirt collects at the tail base, along the lower back and around the neck ruff. Part the coat and look at the skin. Use a fine flea comb over a white towel to make specks easier to see.

If it looks like flea dirt

Treat every dog and cat in the home on the same day using the correct weight band. Keep a light, repeatable clean going for long enough to outlast hidden stages in soft furnishings.

Home rhythm for the next few months

    • Vacuum rugs, skirting and sofa seams and empty the vacuum outside

    • Hot wash pet bedding and favourite blankets and dry thoroughly

    • Shake and sun-dry door and car mats after wet or sandy days

If it looks like regular dirt

Rinse off dust or salt, then towel dry to the skin. Stay on your usual prevention schedule and recheck in a week. If specks keep returning, repeat the paper towel test and follow the steps above.

    Safety basics

Species matters. Match weight band and minimum age. Do not stack different preventives unless your vet advises. Store products cool and dry.

    FAQ

I found flea dirt but no live fleas. Is treatment still needed
Yes. Flea dirt means fleas are feeding or recently fed. Treat every pet and start the home rhythm above.
