Spot-on vs oral flea treatment: which is best for my pet

    Introduction

Both spot-ons and oral chews work well when used correctly. The best option is the one that suits your pet and your routine so you can give it on time, every time. This guide was prepared by our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    How they differ

Spot-ons are applied to the skin. They need a dry period after application and can be affected by frequent bathing if you ignore label guidance. They are handy for fussy eaters.
Oral chews work from the inside and are not washed off by baths or swimming. They suit active dogs and water lovers and are easy to schedule with monthly routines.

    Choosing based on your household

    • Swimmers or frequent baths. Oral chews are usually easier to keep consistent.

    • Fussy eaters or diet limits. Spot-ons avoid giving a chew.

    • Mixed cat and dog homes. Some dog spot-ons contain permethrin; keep cats away from recently treated dogs as labels advise.

    • Need broad parasite cover. Some chews combine flea and tick control with heartworm prevention and intestinal worm control.

    Dosing and expectations

Most products are monthly. A few last longer. Follow the label and set a reminder. After you start, you may still see a few fleas for a short time as they emerge from the home environment. Keep dosing on schedule and keep up the cleaning routine.

    Safety you should always check

    • Species matters. Dog products for dogs only. Never use a dog product on a cat.

    • Choose the correct pack for current weight and age.

    • Follow label directions around bathing for spot-ons and with-food advice for chews.

    • Do not stack flea products unless your vet tells you to.

    • Seek vet advice before starting any product if your pet is pregnant, breeding or has a known health issue.

    FAQ

Which works faster, spot-on or oral?
Both can act quickly when used as directed. Consistency matters more than format.

    Can I switch between formats?
Yes. Make a clean switch by starting the new product when the old one is due. That avoids double dosing and gaps.

Do I need flea control in winter?
Yes in most Australian homes. Indoor environments let fleas persist year-round.
