Heatwave and parasites: keep Aussie pets protected

    Introduction

Heatwaves accelerate parasite life cycles and can stress pets. Keep prevention on schedule and add a few heat-smart habits. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Heat-smart parasite routine

    • Dose on time. Set a calendar alert and keep the box near the food bowl

    • Indoors cool and dry. Fans or air-con help reduce flea hatching in soft furnishings

    • Water bowls refreshed often. Tip out outdoor bowls daily to cut mosquito breeding

    • Yard care. Short grass and trimmed shrubs make tick checks easier

    Walks, swims and grooming

    • Exercise at dawn or dusk and rest in the heat of the day

    • Chews aren’t washed off by bathing or swimming

    • For spot-ons, respect dry times on the label before baths or beach trips

    Quick tick and flea checks

Run a hand over coat and skin each evening in season. Focus on ear edges, lips, under collar, between toes, armpits, groin and tail base. Comb cats where they like to be touched.

    Cooling comforts that help

    • Shade tents on decks and patios

    • Cool mats or damp towels to lie on

    • Fresh water at multiple stations, especially for multi-pet homes

    • Avoid hot cars and metal ute trays

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Species matters. Never use a dog product on a cat

    • Match weight band and minimum age

    • Avoid stacking preventatives unless your vet advises

    • Watch for heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, collapse. Seek vet help quickly

    FAQ

Do parasites really spike in heatwaves?
Warmth shortens their life cycle. You’ll often see faster flea hatching and steady mosquito activity.

Can I skip a month if my pet stays inside?
No. Gaps invite outbreaks. Keep prevention year-round.
