Coastal trips mean sand, salt and scrub. That also means fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. A simple plan keeps your dog comfortable while you enjoy the beach. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
Dose a few days before departure so protection is active
Pack the next dose if your due date falls during the trip
Re-weigh and confirm the correct weight band
Add a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers to your kit
Shake out blankets each morning; dry in the sun when you can
Keep food sealed and rubbish lidded to deter wildlife visitors
Rinse salt and sand from coats and paws after swims
Sweep the tent floor and car boot to remove sand and flea dirt
Lips, ear edges, under collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base. Re-check after bush tracks and dunes.
Grip close to the skin with a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers. Lift straight out with steady pressure. Keep the tick sealed in case your vet wants to identify it. Watch your dog for 24–48 hours.
Bravecto Chew for Dogs — long-acting flea and tick control for fewer dates to remember on extended trips
NexGard Chewables for Dogs — simple monthly fleas and ticks that suit swim-heavy holidays
Simparica Trio Chewable Tablet for Dogs — monthly all-in-one when used as directed, helpful if you prefer a single chew to cover more
Dog products for dogs only
Match current weight band and minimum age
Do not stack preventatives unless your vet advises
Keep products cool and dry in the car; follow label dry times for any topical items you use
Does swimming wash protection off?
Chews are not washed off by water. Rinse salt and sand from the coat for comfort.
We’re heading into a known paralysis-tick area. Anything extra?
Stay on time with dosing, add daily hands-on checks, and avoid dense scrub at dusk.
